Our Building

Our Building

In keeping with our philosophy of honoring Health, and recognizing the crucial role that a healthy environment plays in nurturing that Health, we undertook to create a space uniquely suited for that purpose. In 2007, we contracted with Bateman Partners LLC. to guide us though the process of designing, financing and creating this project. With their help, we assembled a wonderful team of professionals who were committed to our vision of creating such a building. Our contractors, Portland Builders Inc., did the work of bringing this vision to reality, with the help of our architect, David Lloyd.

Fore Solutions, Inc. was contracted by us to provide expert consultation to our team on the process of designing and building a state of the art LEED certified building. The LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. We are very proud that our building was awarded Silver LEED certification thanks to the oversight and documentation provided by Fore Solutions and the implementation of their recommendations by Portland Builders.

Some of the high performance features you will notice in our building are:

  • Low off-gassing interior finishes such as paints, coatings, adhesives, sealants, carpets etc., to maintain healthy environment.
  • All the housekeeping cleaning agents conform to Green Seal standards.
  • Low flow toilet fixtures to conserve water use.
  • Occupancy sensors & daylight sensors to reduce excessive use of electricity
  • All the interior lights intercept opaque surface disallowing direct light spillover. This helps reduce impact on the nocturnal environment
  • The project has committed to purchase Green Power to offset 70% of the grid-connected electricity.
  • Most of the furniture has been reused from the previous office building
  • During the construction process close attention was paid in choosing building materials that have high-recycled content and that were available locally (within 500 miles from the project).

In addition to these and many other features that help to create this “healthy” milieu, each treatment room has a beautiful view of the Presumpscot River estuary. This habitat, adjacent to The Gilsland Farm and Maine Audubon Center, is home to fox, deer, wild turkeys, eagles, hawks and many other forms of wildlife. We feel fortunate to enjoy this proximity to nature, including the music of the many song birds that live just outside our windows, and appreciate the comfort that it brings to our patients.
